Competency Development for Health Directors

Being an effective local health director requires strong skills in three major areas, ranging from management to leadership. This page provides guidance and tools for training, professional development, and career planning for current and aspiring health directors in NC.

The health director competencies are derived from two sources: the Council on Linkages between Academia and Public Health Practice and the National Public Health Leadership Development Network. Focused interviews with local health directors in NC helped to prioritize necessary skills.
