The Project
The Southeast Public Health Training Center
represents a partnership between the University
of North Carolina School of Public Health and academic and practice
partners in Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia
and West Virginia. Eight Public
Health Training Centers across the United States were funded in 2000
by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
to "improve the Nation's public health systems by strengthening the technical,
scientific, managerial and leadership competencies and capabilities of
the current and future public health workforce," particularly in under-served
areas.
Goals for the Next Five Years

Inventory and evaluate current public health
training

Assess the education and training needs of
the public health workforce

Design state-specific plans for the training
of the public health workforce

Design a regional system for the development
and sharing of public health training

Coordinate the delivery of educational programs
according to each state's plan

Encourage collaborative projects between public
health academia and practice partners

Place students for field training in public
or not-for-profit health organizations and

Recruit minorities in the health professions.
